Keri Anderson, our Root and Branch Pastoral Intern from the University of Chicago Divinity School, gives us an account of the incarnation.
Readings:
John 1:1-4, 14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all humankind…14 The Word of God became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.
Philippians 2:6-7
Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and being born in human likeness.
Luke 1:26-32, 34-35
26 God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a woman pledged to be married to a man named Joseph. Her name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High…”
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God…”
