The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Yeshua

MARKOS

It was… nine in the morning, when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him was written above:

THIS IS YESHUA KING OF THE JEWS.

With him they crucified two thieves, one on the right and one on the left of him.

And those passing by blasphemed him, shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself by coming down from the cross. Likewise the high priests mocked him among themselves and with the scholars said, “He saved others but he can’t save himself. Let the mashiah, the King of Yisrael, now come down from the cross so we can see and believe. 

MATTITYAHU

“He trusted in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the son of God.’”

LOUKAS

One of the criminals hanging there insulted him and said, “Are you not the mashiah? Save yourself and us!”

But the other one reproved the first criminal and said, “Do you not fear God, since you shared the same sentence? And we were justly punished, and are getting what we deserve, but he did nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Yeshua, remember me.”

And Yeshua replied, 

Amain, I say to you, today you will be with me

In paradise.

MARKOS

From noon on, darkness came over all the land until three in the afternoon. And about three o’clock, Yeshua cried out in a great voice, 

Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?

meaning,

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

Some of those standing near heard him and said, “See, he calls to Eliyahu.” And someone ran up with a sponge soaked in vinegar, placed it on a reed stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Let him alone. Let us see if Yeshayahu comes to take him down.”

But Yeshua let out a great cry and breathed his last breath.

…

And the centurion who was near saw him breathe his last and said, “Truly this man was the son of God.”

LOUKAS

On the first day of the week at early dawn the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, and when they went inside they did not find the body.

And it happened that while they were at a loss about this, look, two men stood near them in clothing that gleamed like lightning.

The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the earth but the men said to them, 

MATTITYAHU

Don’t be afraid. I know you are looking for Yeshua who was crucified.

He is not here. He has risen just as he said…

The women left the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell the news to the students. And look, Yeshua met them and said, 

Hello!

And they came near him and grabbed his feet and worshiped him.

Yeshua said to them,

Do not fear. Go and tell my brothers and sisters

To go to the Galil and there they will see me.

LOUKAS

When they returned from the tomb they reported all this to the eleven and to the others. The women were Miryam of Magdala and Yohannah and Miryam of Yaakov and the other women with them. They told the messengers these things, and to them their words seemed madness. They did not believe them.

Matthew 14:22-33

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

1 Thessalonians 5

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, ‘There is peace and security’, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labour pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

I told you last night that I might be gone sometime, and you said, where, and I said, to be with the good Lord, and you said, why, and I said, because I'm old, and you said, I don't think you're old. And you put your hand in my hand and you said, you aren't very old, as if that settled it. I told you you might have a very different life from mine, and from the life you've had with me, and that would be a wonderful thing, there are many ways to live a good life. And you said, mama already told me that. And then you said, don't laugh! Because you thought I was laughing at you. You reached up and put your fingers on my lips and gave me that look I never in my life saw on any other face besides your mothers. It's a kind of furious pride, very passionate and Stern. I'm always a little surprised to find my eyebrows unsinged after I've suffered one of those looks. I will miss them.

It seems ridiculous to suppose the dead miss anything. If you're a grown man when you read this -- it is my intention for this letter that you will read it then -- I'll have been gone a long time. I'll know most of what there is to know about being dead, but I'll probably keep it to myself. That seems to be the way of things.

Co-pastor Neil Ellingson talks about how the old and strange vocabulary of Christianity can still teach us something about stuff today. Two video clips were used in this recording that are you can't hear. They are clips from the Simpsons (where Bart goes to live in France and after a terrible time of being mistreated realized in a fit of anguish that he can speak fluent French) and Ghost Dog (a scene where two characters who are best friends talk to each other despite not speaking the other person's language).

Part two of a series on hope, Root and Branch Pastoral Intern, Keri Anderson, shares her thoughts on loneliness, the risk of being known, and the beloved community.

1It was just before the Passover Festival [and Jesus was sharing a final meal with his friends]. He knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

4 [While they were eating,] he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

“To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial.  To be known and not loved is our greatest fear.  But to be fully known and truly loved is a lot like being loved by God.  It is what we need more than anything.  It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.”

Co-pastor Timothy Kim talks about what hope is, what it takes to imagine better things, and how that relates to the idea of God's Kingdom being present for us today (and not in the distant, unknown future).

Luke 24:13-24

13Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” 19He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.”

“Where there is genuine hope, there that for which we hope already has some presence.  In some way, the hoped for is at the same time here and not here. It is not yet fulfilled, and it may remain unfulfilled. But it here, in the situation and in ourselves, as a power which drives those who hope into the future. There is a beginning here and now. And this beginning drives toward an end. The hope itself, IF it is rooted in the reality of something already given, becomes a driving, power and makes fulfillment not certain, but possible.”

Keri Anderson, our Root and Branch Pastoral Intern from the University of Chicago Divinity School, gives us an account of the incarnation.

Luke 1:26-32, 34-35

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High…”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God…”
